Review: 'IAmFire'
'Eyes Wide Open (EP)'

-  Label: 'Deadlight Entertainment'

Our Rating:
The deeply divisive Peter Dolving returns once again, and his latest outfit lineup makes IAmFire something of a supergroup, featuring as it does bassist Mikael Ehlert (BloodEagle, Hatesphere), drummer Ulf Scott (L.O.C, Suspekt, Great Deciever, Tech9), and guitarist Peter Ahlers Ohlsen (MOB). Love him or loathe him, it would be hard to deny the fact this EP, the first fruits of their studio work, is a behemoth that infuses elements of 70s heavy rock and grunge with a psychedelic twist to powerful effect.

Containing just two tracks, I could contend that this is really only a single, but quality beats quantity, and besides, we’re still looking at 13 minutes of music here. ‘Eyes Wide Open’ carves a deep, sludgy, bass-led groove. Evoking acts like Melvins and Soundgarden, it’s slow, heavy and steeped in many shades of guitar-hefting rock lore.

‘Burn Your Halo Red’ is a big, fat, balls-out grunger with a sneering vocal and some surprisingly light and tuneful backing vocals. With a sinewy guitar and meandering bass-line detailing unexpected contours in the mid-section before it all powers home with some churning riffology, it proves that it’s still possible for old-school rock to be exciting.
