Nothing to do with the spectacularly popular US sitcom that defined the 90s, ‘Friends’ is a sweet sunburst of shoegazey indie pop. 2’24” in duration, it’s honed to perfection, the harmonies breeze through the chorus, while a brittle lead guitar line tinkles delicately against a soft-focus backdrop. It also features one of the most unexpected endings I’ve heard in ages. Did the tape run out?
Similarly, counterpart track ‘Flowers’ isn’t a cover of the track on the Psychedelic Furs’ eponymous debut LP, and is instead a magnificently dreamy song that evokes dappled sunlight and aching nostalgia. Understated but so, so delicately poised, it tugs at the emotions almost subliminally.
Together, the two tracks make for a gorgeous introduction to Tape Runs Out. They’re going to be one of those bands people absolutely fall in love with.
