Review: 'SILVIA & THE FISHES ON FRIDAY'
'Under Water EP'

-  Label: 'Sign-Pole Records'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '8th April 2015'

Our Rating:
For the album Fishes Bowl (2012), the curiously named Silvia & The Fishes On Friday from Udine in North-East Italy were a trio. Now Silvia is accompanied only by Guido on guitar and backing vocals.

This five-track EP was recorded in Berlin, produced by an Irishman (Paul Pilot) and is released through a Japanese label, a connection that came about through Silvia's visits to Tokyo as a language student.

All the songs are in English, with a perfectly correct though somewhat stilted pronunciation.

The music exudes a rather solemn mood which comes when rain turns into snow (Winter Song) or after a curtain falls for the final time (Theater Of Thoughts).

The brooding, fatalistic character never really lifts so there is seemingly little to console this pair of unquiet souls or to give much solace to the listener.

At the risk of mixing a few watery metaphors, swimmers should be warned that these songs are brimful of sinking feelings; so end up being more about drowning than waving.
