It’s indie pop, but it’s got some seriously sharp edges. There’s a primitive, primal element that gives a sense of danger to the songs on Tender Prey’s attest offering. Laura Byron’s vocals may, at times, have the girlie sweetness of The Primitives’ Tracy Tracy, but there are some explosive drums and buzzsaw guitars driving things off-kilter, slanting and skewing the clean pop into new orbits.
Song titles like ‘Bug Blood’, ‘Chicken Liver Blues’, ‘Blood Simple’ and ‘The Tequila Worm’ give a fair indication of the album’s slightly warped leanings. ‘Organ Calzone’ has guts, and a bit of brain, too. At times sounding like Shonen Knife at their spikiest, the ramshackle garage guitar coupled with the upbeat but slightly twisted vocals make for an album that’s exuberant and a little bit crazed.
