As if the band’s name and album title didn’t provide adequate indication of the dark and ultimately unpleasant bent of their latest offering, the Swedish Death Metal / Goregrind act’s new album comes housed in a suitably lurid cover. And then there are the song titles: ‘Bonesaw Facefuck’, ‘Spinal Cord Impalement’, ‘Vomit Drenched In Mucus’, ‘Choking On Feces’, ‘Rot In Excrement’, ‘Black Flood Of Body Fluids’, ‘Grinding The Dead’... The list goes on. It makes Carcass sound like a children’s TV show singalong. It isn’t subtle, but nor is it supposed to be.
If you’re on the market for something brutally nasty and so heavy it hurts, then look no further than ‘Orgy in Guts’. The vocals are barely audible beneath a mudslide of grinding guitars, the cymbal-heavy drumming crashing relentless tidal waves of noise. The album’s 15 tracks blur into a frenetic and sustained sonic assault.
To complain that it’s vulgar, tasteless or otherwise nasty is to miss the point. You’re not supposed to like this. Equally, it would be misguided to complain about its overt lack of taste: puerile as it may be, this is not about promoting anything, but a horroe-movie blast of nihilism with a desire to shock and repel.

What it lacks in variety it makes up for in terms of sheer density: ‘Orgy in Guts’sits very much in the bracket of late 80s and early 90s grind, as exemplified by acts like Carcass, Napalm Death and Extreme Noise Terror, with elements of the downtuned violence of early Fudge Tunnel Thrown in for additional murk. In other words, ‘Orgy In Guts’ could have easily been released on Earache circa 1988.
It’s as pretty as entrails, but as effective as a butcher’s cleaver.
