Review: 'MY RED CELL'
'KNOCK ME DOWN'

-  Label: 'V2 Music'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '8th March 2004'-  Catalogue No: 'VVR5025527'

Our Rating:
The first single from Welsh rockers My Red Cell was a lacklustre affair imaginatively entitled ‘My Red Cell EP’. This their second release is a huge step forward. ‘Knock me Down’ is a sad lament full of clattering guitars and whisky tinged vocals.

The overall feel is bluesy rock that immediately brings to mind The White Stripes with a fuller sound. In particular singer Russell Toomey sounds incredibly similar to Jack White at his unhinged best. Working around the refrain ‘I ain’t mad with you darling / Just a bit disappointed’ it drips with sarcasm and pain. ‘Knock me Down’ is a melodramatic paean redeemed by a rousing shout along chorus that places itself head and shoulders above the legions of garage rock pretenders out there at the moment.

It is also worth checking out B side ‘Going out for Nothing’, a rollicking hooligan romp that’s full of menace and sounds like the Eighties Matchbox B Line Disaster having a fight with a gang of skinheads. My Red Cell are well worth checking out.
