Review: 'Wright, Aaron'
'Flying Machine'

-  Album: 'Flying Machine'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '4th September 2015'

Our Rating:
The list of contributors and collaborators featured on Aaron Wright’s second album is likely to be sufficient to determine whether or not this is an album to rush toward or race away from: produced by Francis McDonald (Teenage Fan Club), it features guest appearances from members of Belle & Sebastian (Nigel Bailie - trumpet, Steve Jackson - guitar, Mick Cooke - horns), Camera Obscura (Ann Campbell - vocals), Rezillos (Chris Agnew - vocals/bass) and Teenage Fanclub (Norman Blake - bass/vocals).

But this is of course Aaron’s album, and his songwriting is clearly crafted and considered. ‘I Know I’m Sorry’ harks back to pop of a 60s vintage, (perhaps not surprisingly) filtered through the jangle of 80s indie and later purveyors of soft, melodic pop-centric indie, the likes of Belle and Sebastian and Teenage Fanclub. ‘Miles of Clear’ gives particular emphasis to Wright’s country leanings, although there’s a smooth sheen to it,

Elsewhere, ‘All I Need is You’ delves into bad country territory, and his jaunty melodies, coupled with some cumbersome lyrics, are liable to grate somewhat.

It’s completely not my scene: I simply can’t find any connection with this kind of fey indie stuff, but hey, it’s got some nice tunes and all that.
