In the current climate, in the digital world, the title rings true. No-one needs to undertake research: their opinions are gospel. But as any rational person knows, opinions ae like arseholes: everyone’s got one, and they don’t need to be exposed in public.
The bump ‘n’ grind of the technodisco opener ‘Signal Failure’ sets the tone for another genre-mashing release from the singular Shit and Shine. ‘Upside Down Cheeseburger’ has heavy echoes of Chris and Cosey’s ‘Trance’ and Factory Floor and the album as a whole is built on monotonous rhythms and pulsating bass, but make no mistake, this isn’t your standard club music.
Stuttering beats and bulbous bass skitter and scrape through tracks that on the surface appear so mundane, with drab titles like ‘Bus Station’ and ‘Picnic Table. But then, ‘Working on My Fitness’ links back to the title which reveals their attenuation to contemporary vogues, and while incorporating tropes embedded in 80s, 90s and post-millennial nostalgia, Shit and Shine meld everything together to forge something entirely new, that at once calms and unsettles. It’s all about the juxtaposition of the familiar and the alien.

The nine-minute ‘Wespennest’ bludgeons away at a thunderous, barrelling groove for what feels like an eternity: the effect is mesmerising. And then there’s the punishing grind of ‘Ass’ and the mesmeric loops of ‘Clapham North’. It really is something else. Precisely what, I’m not sure, but then that’s the point.
