Today, They Are Older – it’s hardly a band name that trips off the tongue. It’s also rather a meaningless phrase. Older than what, or whom? They’re hardly likely to be younger today than they were last week, are they? Still, their music makes a lot more sense: hailing from the industrial market town of Darwen in Lancashire, they’re got plenty to rage about.
There aren’t many hooks here, and choruses aren’t really their thing: instead, the five tracks launch a sustained and frenzied attack that jolts and jars, screaming and hammering hard. With the exception of the break in ‘From Finland with Love’ which features the vocal talents of Paris Taylor (no, not the Canadian rugby player), it isn’t pretty, but it is fierce, gut-wrenching and hard.
