Review: 'CAPTAIN WILBERFORCE'
'The Late Captain Wilberforce EP'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '9th November 2015'

Our Rating:
Good pop songs never really go out of style but the struggle to find an audience is now greater than ever.

In recognition of how many listeners navigate to You Tube in search of new sounds (with vision), each of the four songs on this EP, free to download from the band's website, come with a visual accompaniment.

The videos are as modest and understated as the music in which the drama never strays very far from the kitchen sink.

The 4 piece band from Leeds are fronted by Simon Bristoll whose lyrics are as unsentimental as Elvis (Costello) without sounding as spiteful.

On the lead song,Couples, he asks "Is there anything more sickening than couples in love?", the kind of question posed (though not necessarily spoken out loud) by those who find themselves suddenly single.

Doubts and other downbeat sentiments surface in The King Of Indecision and Behind Crossed Fingers but any venom tends to be directed inwards or expressed in relatively polite terms e.g. "everyone's stupid and I don't like them".

The acoustic Colour Me In closes proceedings on a brighter note with romantic thoughts coming to the rescue.

This, after all, is Northern pop that knows the importance of a happy ending.
