Review: 'Meijer, Julia'
'Ocean/England'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '22nd December 2015'

Our Rating:
Since moving to the UK, Swedish native Julia Meijer has played a range of shows in Oxford and London, becoming known for her performances in galleries, churches, pubs and cafes in the Oxford area – her most memorable perhaps being the Andy Warhol/William Morris exhibition launch event at the Modern Art Oxford, and to a packed Folk Barn at Wilderness Festival.

The lyrics of Ocean are based on ‘Hav’ (ocean/sea) by Icelandic poet Steinn Steinarr. (1908-1958), regarded as one of the most significant poets Icelandic poets in his native country despite remaining largely unknown further afield.

Meijer’s debut single – a double A-side – is sparse, haunting, ethereal and rich in mood and atmosphwre. On ‘Ocean’, the minimalist backing of soft-focus picked acoustic guitar and subtle synths proves the perfect foil for her tantalising self-harmonising vocal tracks, draped in reverb – deep, but not so deep as to obscure.

‘England’ is a brooding piece of gothic post-rock, which not only reveals a different side of Julia Meijer’s musical inclinations, but conjures an altogether different mood and suggests there’s a lot to get excited about here.
