Review: 'El Caco'

Our Rating:
Ok, so who thought ‘El Caco’ translated as ‘The Shit’ or something similar? Really, only me? Liars, the lot of you. But of course, El Caco actually means ‘thief’ in Spanish, and this trio have been on the go for a decade and a half now, and the good news is that ‘7’ is most certainly not shit, even if the claim that ‘on this album, El Caco has whipped a creamy cream of both rock & roll, grunge, and stoner rock’ sounds decidedly dubious.

They bring the grunge / punk riffery and dash of Mororhead as they open the album in fiery style with the shouty single cut ‘Curious’, while the fierce chug of ‘Sickness’ calls to mind Hawk Eyes, combining melody with ferocity to hard-hitting effect. Despite leaping from contrasting segments – from tension-building stop/start riffs to driving powerchords, everything knits together seamlessly, and El Caco reveal their ability and agility repeatedly over the course of the album’s eight tracks.

If at times they wander into commercial rock territories, and never lose sight of the benefits of a decent chorus the snarling, old-school heavy metal thunder of ‘Reach Out’ and the epic prog workout of ‘In Space All Huge Beasts Just See’ balance things toward the heavier end of the spectrum and male for an album that’s both ambitious and solid.
