Review: 'CODE I'
'A Deep Red'

-  Label: 'Fluttery Records'
-  Genre: 'Post-Rock' -  Release Date: '22nd November 2015'

Our Rating:
Code I is Alex Wilkinson of Nottingham UK and one man bands rarely sound as powerful as this.

With just drums and guitar this is the kind of solo project which often suffers from a lack of variety. Fortunately, this is not the case here.

Wilkinson's second full length album skilfully combines delicate ambient sequences with harder-edged guitar rock as demonstrated on Broken Down and it is easy to imagine Islanders being worked into a full-blooded heavy metal hit.

There are no vocals but Restricted By Force plays out to the accompaniment of a sample from an address by John F.Kennedy to the American Newspaper Publishers Association in 1961. Speaking of the need for increased security and vigilance, this speech sounds ominously topical as he warns the gathered members of the press that "our way of life is under attack".

Although epic and ambitious in scope, no track lasts more than six minutes. This leaves ample room for expansion although working within such self-imposed constraints ensures that the dynamic finale to the closing track - They Say The Sky Will Die Soon - packs a punch that might be less dramatic in a longer piece.

It gives due notice that this is more than just a run of the mill post-rock album.
