Review: 'WRIGHT, TIM'
'THE RIDE'

-  Label: 'NOVAMUTE'
-  Genre: 'Dance' -  Release Date: '5th April 2004'-  Catalogue No: 'CDNOMU 14'

Our Rating:
Busy boy, TIM WRIGHT. As techno-boffin bods tend to do, he's released an album under the name Tube Jerk, remixed Radioactive Man and got involved in Ninjatune's New Flesh Hip-Hop project and also his own band Sand all in the past 12 months. Bloody hell: where do eating and sleeping figure in the bigger picture, matey?

Proving that such pastimes are for cissies when you could be knockin' out bangin' tunes for 25 hours of the day, Tim's now back under his own steam with "The Ride", the first fruits from the sessions that produced soon-come debut album (as Tim Wright anyway) "Thirst" for Novamute. Bearing in mind W&H weren't exactly blown away by the lock grooves and sheer aural terror of his previous outing "Going Down", "The Ride" was approached with caution, but it's OK actually. Employing soothing femmy backing vox and hectoring ragga interludes from New Flesh crew man Toastie Taylor, it's got an intriguing On-U Sound meets Basement Jaxx feel about it which improves with repeated plays.

This being primarily a club release, we also get the mandatory slew of remixes, which - predictably - vary in quality. I can do without Tim Wright's own remix of the track, which is real aural headache stuff: sure the bouncing bassline's a killer, but the phased distortion blows yer head off when approached without a ready supply of disco biscuits. By comparison, Chilean laddie Luciano's remix is a winner. Sparse and glitchy and closer to the sparseness achieved by the likes of Ascoltare and Chris Clark, this is a fascinating 8 minutes with the sort of tiny jarring outside flourishes that work to perfection. Not bad at all.
