It seems that Joykill Collective haven’t always been a collective, beginning life in the attic of a Northampton arts commune as the solo project of a guy called Lief. The project soon expanded, and this EP is the first fruits of the multimedia collective’s collabiorations.
‘Liberty Taker’ has a theatrical flourish that alludes to Bowie an astute pop attenuation that evokes the sharp songwriting of Mansun. ‘Battle Cry’ works a more progressive, rock-orientated seam, exploring quiet / loud dynamics to good effect and building to a rousing climax worthy of its chanted title.
They display an almost schizophrenic turn on the guitar-driven rock out that is ‘Game Show’, which contrasts with the quiet contemplation of ‘Lies and Gold’. It’s unexpected, but shows they’re a band with range, both musically and lyrically.
