Review:'Cornershop ft The Mike Flowers Pops' 'Hold the Corner EP'
- Genre: 'Indie'
- Release Date: '1st April 2016'
Our Rating:
It’s released on April first, so is this an April fool thing? I generally consider Cornershop to be something of a novelty band, and not just on account of their big chart hit, ‘Brimful of Asha’ as remixed by corny imposter dance music guru Norman Cook.
The context of this release is that last year saw 90s indie mainstays Cornershop release their 1994 debut completely reworked as an easy listening work under the title ‘Hold On It’s Easy’, prompting some critics to draw comparisons to Mike Flowers Pops – unquestionably a novelty act who should have never been allowed in the 90s, but should have certainly remained there. That postmodern ironic shtick where people justified abysmal taste by saying thing were so bad they were good was never cool or funny.
‘Born Disco, Died Heavy Metal’ from their debut album had a certain scratchy-lo fi appeal and a youthful energy. This brass-laden disco-funk reworking has neither. The croony rendition of ‘Change’ is supremely naff in that 70s lounge way and I’m not going to expend unnecessary typing energy on the sub-Pulp crapfest that is ‘Readers’ Wives’. So, unfortunately, this is no joke. And it really is no joke.
