This is punk rock. It’s the debut album by Japanese all-female foursome Otoboke Beaver. They take their name from a local ‘love hotel’ and position themselves among the new wave of feminist bands emerging from the Japanese alternative scene. It’s a ferocious, tempestuous tumult of angular noise, all stop-start guitars.
Overloading walls of guitar noise and piledriving percussion propel these explosive blasts of raw energy. It’s hectic, jerky, fiery and frenetic. And at times, it’s plain weird; take for example the intro the Dead Kennedys on steroids ‘Powerfull Busu’. I mean, who in the world knows what’s going on or what it’s all about? ‘Oniisan Anone’ kicks up a frenzied funk racket, and the spirit of the Riot Grrrl movement is evoked throughout this relentless ruckus of a record.

Combining the punky scuzz of Bikini Kill, the brawling, squalling abrasion of Huggy Bear and the bratty indie pop sensibilities of Voodoo Queens, ‘Okoshiyasu!! Otoboke Beaver’ is a nonstop rush.
