Review: 'McINROE, KEEGAN'
'Uncouth Pilgrims'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '27th May 2016'

Our Rating:
Keegan McInroe is Texas-based singer songwriter, proud to be a rambling man and resigned to being more sinner than saint.

His fourth album takes its title from The Innocents Abroad, a travelogue by Mark Twain. In it, he presents a grizzled but not unduly grim view of his world backed by a crew of trusted Texan musicians.

It contains a generous 14 tracks and over an hour's worth of music. Twelve are his own songs, the two covers are of Lindsay Hightower's Resolutions and Michael Bombatomica's Flower Song For Barefoot Dancers.

Overall, there's a nice mix of moods ranging from the raunchy and rude I Got Trouble to the gentle and mild Verona.

He name checks Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard on the opening tuneCountry Music Outlaws but identifies himself a "shaggy singer of songs" rather than an outlaw.

There's a hint of Tom Waits in the title track while Woody & Ruth is the tale of a messy love affair in the Townes Van Zandt tradition. The latter plays to his strengths as a singer and storyteller.

This a fairly raw, bluesy take on alt.country but McInroe writes good tunes and comes over as a genuine and genial host.
