Review: 'Hercules Morse'
'Equine Size Comparison (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '2nd September 2016'

Our Rating:
A band can have the best songs in the world, but it doesn’t count for much if no-one gets to hear them. For a band to really get anywhere, they need exposure and momentum. The last year or so has seen Hercules Morse gain both, with press coverage galore, radio support from Kerrang and BBC6, and stages shared with high-profile acts including Turbowolf, Band of Skulls, Black Peaks and Blaze Bailey. Such diverse billings (they’ve also appeared on festival bills alongside The Streets, Duran Duran and Tinchy Stryder) are indicative of the broad appeal of their ‘Foo Fighters meets Queen of the Stone Age’ rock sound.

This five-tracker showcases some beefy, riff-centred songs. There’s a bluesy edge to ‘Asleep at the Wheel’, and if I can’t help but hear elements of Extreme in ‘The Boss’, it’s still hard to discount the power of the groove.

If I were to make any criticisms of the EP – and as a music critic, I feel it’s my duty to do so – the main gripe would be that lacks the individuality of its predecessor, the ‘Edge of Life’ EP, and if anything, it’s a bit tame, a bit family-friendly and insipid. More Foos that QOTSA, you might say. Rock music simply shouldn’t feel so safe. They may not have the best songs in the world, but they’ve got the momentum and the exposure keeps on coming: for a band pitching at the commercial end of the rock spectrum, they’re doing everything right.
