Review: 'San Luis Obispo'
'EP'

-  Label: 'Freakscene'
-  Genre: 'Post-Rock' -  Release Date: 'April 2004'

Our Rating:
The latest to emerge from Exeter’s thriving ‘scene’, oh-yeah… it’s gotta be ‘seen’, well ‘heard’ I spose, but anyways … They’re San Luis Obispo. You’ve heard the fairytail, shoeshine boy to rock star, only in the West Country!

This new exciting 4 piece are Charlie (Guitar/Vox), Nick (Guitar), Liam (Bass), and Jim (Drums & Sax). This is their first release on the rather excellent Freakscene Records, which has been turning heads, well maybe making them nod back and forth.

Winning the prestegious ‘Yojimbo Juice Prize’ for best song title; “There has always been a valid prevailing demand for the use of February” has thrust them into the limelight; well amongst the prize judges anyways. (and yes, the whole of this paragraph was pure bullshit).

Not hailing from California as you might expect, San Luis Obispo draw influences from Fugazi, Slint and Bryn Terfel. (Yes, again one of those was a lie, can you guess which?)

So does the combination of hypnotic guitars, juxtaposed drums and Charlies vocals; which occur with the same frequency as dialogue from cheerie fat fellow, Silent Bob, work? Yes.

And by the time you’ve read this far you’ve probably logged onto www.freakscene.co.uk and bought the CD, so what now?

Well you need to see them live! Live as in playing, not, you know, live, like just walking down the street living. So check out www.cavernclub.co.uk, see when they’re playing, jump on a train, and check them out. And if after all that you don’t like them, then there’s always the bar.

So after listening to the CD, I can’t fairly do a San Luis Obismal gag, instead its just a thumbs up to the boys.
