Review: 'All Pigs Must Die'
'Hostage Animal'

-  Label: 'Southern Lord'
-  Genre: 'Thrash Metal' -  Release Date: '27th October 2017'

Our Rating:
Ultra-hardcore supergroup All Pigs Must Die know about intensity. Their third long-player is another furiously grindy effort, a crusty, gnarly mess of noise that’s fast, frenetic and also massively heavy. While the instrumentation is something of a genre-typical blur that tends to congeal in the mid-range, there’s a lot of bowel-churning low-end going down.

The loping rhythm of ‘A Caustic Vision’ provides some variation from the relentless blastbeats, and the doomily atmospheric, echo-in-the-fog intro to the crawling power chord march of ‘Slave Morality’ gives some nice texture. ‘End Without End’ conveys with sickening intensity the anguish and torture of a pained eternity, but plays out with an instrumental break of cracked beauty that somehow offers hope in the swirling darkness.

As on their previous outings, APMD explore more expansive structures with a number of tracks which extend beyond the five-minute mark, and contrast these with a number of gut-punching sub-two-minuters that leave you dazed and winded, reeling at the sheer brutality and force.

It’s the range which places APMD above the majority of their peers: there’s no shortage of grunt ‘n’ churn, but there’s a lot more than just blind fury on offer here.
