Review: 'Bobbie Peru'
'I Am Contagious'

-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '10th November 2017'

Our Rating:
Mark E Smith says they’re ‘better than the fucking Prodigy’. I don’t know if that’s because he hates The Prodigy and the bar is therefore low in his eyes, or if he’s a Prodigy uberfan, making Bobbie Peru one of the best bands around. However, he’s seen fit to invite them to support The Mighty Fall on a number of occasions now, so unless he considers this a means of humiliation, I suspect this is interpretable as Smith thinking they’re rather good. And on the strength of this release, he’d be right, although they’re not exactly a ‘Fall’ band.

In fact, however you look at it, The Prodigy make for a rather odd comparison, because thrash-trash punk merchants Bobbie Peru, bristling with new-wave energy and boasting elements of industrial / metal / hardcore, aren’t even in the same musical sphere.

‘I Am Contagious’ is a snarling blast of petulance, everything piling in and driving on at a hundred miles an hour. And it has a narrative of sorts. It’s not polished, but it’s unswervingly direct. Everything’s in overdrive, from the drums to the guitars to the adrenaline. The guitars are jagged and scratchy and slant across a relentless, thumping beat that doesn’t let up for a second.

The AAAK Remix adds 48 seconds and some synths, while bringing the bass to the fore and melding it to a stomping industrial groove.

It’s intense, and yes, they’re better than the fucking Prodigy. Miles better.
