Review: 'Perception'
'Monolith'

-  Genre: 'Thrash Metal' -  Release Date: '9th March 2018'

Our Rating:
Thunderous percussion – with bursts of double-time kick drumming for emphasis – propels the heavy, heavy sound showcases on ‘Monolith’, the second EP by Perception. The songs may be fairly concise- each sitting around the four-minute mark – but they bear all the hallmarks of true epics. They’re full of twists, turns and changes of tempo and tone.

Where Perception succeed in comparison to many other exponents of tech-metal is that despite the complexity of the compositions, they don’t feel overly busy and none of it feels forced. The melodic passages are soulful not not too emo or wimpy, and Ben Clark’s vocal range is impressive – switching from emotive and tunefully mellow to throat-ripping anguish, and even tortured dalek. It’s an accomplished set, and far, far better than the cover art would suggest.
