Coach Hop is the musical vehicle for one Charlie Laurence, born in Florida, based in London. Fountains Of Wayne, They Might Be Giants, and Weezer are dropped as stylistic references in reference to a single which is pitched as being ‘on the surface is a love song to the titular pop star but upon closer inspection is an observation on the state of the modern music industry’.
Musically, it’s pretty flimsy guitar-driven poppy alt-rock, and the lyrics – delivered with a classic indie/emo twang (at least genuine) – border on the irritatingly smart-arse. But just before the chorus kicks, in, Charlie unleashes a deep-throated roar. It’s petty much inexplicable, and all the better for it. So much so, it makes the song. Forget the hooks and breezy melody: it’s all in the roar.
