Synth overload! Timewarp! – and no, not in the Rocky Horror sense. This is more than just throwback: it’s absolute reconstruction, an emulation, and one that casts me back to circa 1986. In fact, I’m reminded – for the first time in a very long time (their previous single notwithstanding) – of Five Star.
L.A.D are pitched as ‘a synth funk trio from Reading with a shared love of 80s nostalgia’, and we learn that ‘multi instrumentalists Jack and Luke, having spent years accumulating vintage synths, guitars and drum machines, have teamed up with ginger bombshell Natalie to update the music they love.’
It goes on: ‘They make truly epic Top Of The Pops style classics reminiscent of Madonna at her very pinnacle circa ‘Holiday / Get Into The Groove’… and it’s all true. And I don’t know what d do with it. I’ve covered some retro-orientated releases before, but this takes it to a whole new level.

The depth of research and analysis to (re)create a sound like this goes beyond obsessive. The result is a seriously tight song that’s more than crafted, and sidestepping its derivation, it succeeds as a catchy synth-driven pop song. Mission accomplished.
