Review: 'SEAFOOD'
'Derby, The Vic, 28th April 2004'

-  Genre: 'Indie'

Our Rating:
It seems like the whole of Derby’s gig-going public have squeezed into the Vic tonight, plus some from as far away as the band’s hometown of London.

SEAFOOD are just beginning an eleven date tour to promote their new album, and many nights have been sold out for weeks now. It appears, though, that this band may still be one of British music’s best-kept secrets, with three albums already released and their latest out on May 3, yet no notable chart success to date.

Maybe this is due to change, especially if the new material showcased within their hour-long set is any indication. From the hauntingly melodic opening bars of their first song, "Light Burns Clear", the Vic audience is captivated. By the bands’ own admission, their set seems strangely paced at times – veering from the dreamy and harmonious to crashing rock anthems in the space of one song.

The hardcore fans though – many of whom seem to be on first name terms with the band members – don’t miss a beat. Although I don’t see this band as being radically different to a lot of guitar-wielding indie rock around at the moment, wired singer David Line's lyrics are strangely beautiful, the band's melodies haunting and they are a great live act. A fun time was had by all – as was confirmed by one fan, stumbling from the mosh pit clutching his broken specs, yet still smiling broadly. That's entertainment.
