Review: 'MOUNTAIN MAN'
'Magic Ship'

-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '21st September 2018'

Our Rating:
This female trio, confusingly known as 'Mountain Man', came together by chance at arts college in New England in 2009, recorded an album on the fly (“Made The Harbor”) then went their separate ways after finishing their studies.

Molly Erin Sarlé headed for California, Alexandra Sauser-Monnig returned to Minnesota and Amelia Meath moved to Durham, North Carolina where she formed the electronic pop duo Sylvan Esso.

Fortunately, the three friends stayed in touch and after reuniting in North Carolina bonded all over again on a road trip. Making music together came naturally so at Meath’s home studio in Durham they spent two recording sessions laying down the tracks that make up this album.

Eight years on, the freshness and spontaneity of their songs still shine through on a collection billed as "a magnetic reflection on the joys, follies, and oddities of existence".

The intimate folk–oriented tunes are tailor-made for sharing around campfires perhaps, as Ring Tang Ring Toon suggests, rounded off by skinny dipping under the stars.

The "oh, to feel young again" sentiment of the a capella opening track, AGT expresses a nostalgia for childhood pleasures while nursing the hope that such fond memories may somehow become the basis for a blissful adulthood.

The simple acoustic songs are graced by pure harmonies that will melt the iciest of hearts. They might even persuade hardened city dwellers to commune with nature and be reminded that life doesn't always have to be complicated.
