Review: 'Howling Lords, The'
'Texas Medicine'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '30th November 2018'

Our Rating:
There can’t be many bands on the Isle of Lewis, with its population of just 18,500 occupying its 683 square miles. The Howling Lords have probably been forced to take their gritty blues rock further afield as much by necessity as anything, but hauling themselves to busk in Portugal is an indication of their ambition and the release of ‘Texas Medicine’ ought to expand their reach even further.

The cover art, depicting a corner of a playing card is about as original as the concept of a power trio playing whiskey-soaked blues with the amps up to 11 in the 21st century. But it’s not about originality: there’s been hefty blues-based rock since even before Led Zep and Deep Purple. The song titles alone reveal the debt: ‘Black Dog’; ‘Howling at the Moon’; ‘She Devil’; ‘Still Waters’

But when they really hit the pedals, as they do with frequency, The Howling Lords prove themselves to be prime purveyors of heavy, full-tilt tunes, making ‘Texas Medicine’ a solid and enjoyable album.
