Review: 'SEEL, ALEX'
'Spell On A Tin Drum'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '17th May 2019'

Our Rating:
These nine mellow and modest songs are from a UK singer songwriter whose wanderings have taken him from Devon and Western Ireland to London.

They are simple musings of one man and his acoustic guitar although Toni Geiling plays violin and viola on the opening track - Take This Guitar, an ode to Seel’s chosen instrument.

In addition, Grass Is Greener features trombone played by Tom White and Angelo Vaggi’s space drum give a dreamy Beatle-esque texture to Blue Sky In Our Hands.

The natural world and the pleasures of a roving life are wisely preferred to being sucked into the pressures of the city’s rat race. Eyes Wider Than celebrates a world away from hurried crowds......staring at their phones not talking” while Satellites imagines a world where romance triumphs over a total dependency on technology.

This unassuming record won’t set the world on fire but the gentle, well-crafted melodies are worth investigating and provide a welcome antidote to the endless rush of a world ”in a dead spin”.

Fittingly, the sweet, finger-picking instrumental Quietus, which closes the record, is an open invitation to simply slow the fuck down.
