In the already crowded field of prog metal, Maziac throw debut album ‘Forged’ into the fray. Based in London but of international origins, this 8-tracker is varied, riffy, and melodic. It’s technically competent, and they’ve got some alright hooks. But tit’s oh, so samey. Mazaic could be any one of a million bands.
Maybe as a reviewer I ought to extrapolate and separate, split the wheat from the chaff and explain why certain elements work and others don’t. Maybe I should unpack and unpick. But the bottom line is that much of ‘Forged’ is painfully generic, prog-rock by numbers. For the record, it’s not bad. It’s just mediocre.
