Our Rating:
Chris Rawlins, a native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, is a singer-songwriter who is now based in Chicago. On the nine songs on his debut album he shows that he likes to blend jazz styles with American roots music. His mellow, easy going vocal delivery is enhanced by melodic finger-style guitar playing.

The skyline of windy city is pictured upside down on the cover but Rawlins has a relatively conventional view of the world. In the opening track, Gravity Or Something, he shows that he knows that what goes up must come down. “I write songs that try to describe feelings or things I can’t quite put into words any other way”, he says.

With their pedal steel refrains, Almost Anytime and You & Your Heart are the most obvious country tunes; the rest are gentle folk songs in which love, loneliness and weather are recurring themes.

There are no great revelations or big hits but this modest album is a perfectly pleasant way to pass half an hour.
