Review: 'CHERRY GHOST'
'Live at the Trades Club, Hebden Bridge'

-  Label: 'Heavenly Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '18th April 2020'

Our Rating:
Released on double vinyl and download to coincide with Record Store Day 2020, this 16 track live album is a recording of a matinee performance at the Heavenly Weekender on January 25th 2015.

The sparse instrumental backing come from Christian Madden on keyboards and Grenville Harrop on light percussion. The absence of any large scale arrangements happily means that Simon Aldred’s poetic words and baritone voice are even more to the fore.

The good-natured banter between songs is at odds with the melancholy thrust of these songs. These are tunes for those given to Scott 3 turn of mind.

Aldred sings for the lonely, the lost and the fragile. The PR likens the atmosphere to "drizzly Northern gothic of last bus loneliness" and if you know what this means, you will relate to these songs.

The lyrics conjure up a world of sleazy streets, cheap hotels and stolen kisses infused with a stubborn faith in the power of romance to take us from the gutter to the stars.

The emphasis of the set is on the band's early tunes including their first single, Mathematics and a smattering of lesser known B-sides with the humorous Bad Crowd being especially enjoyable.

They conclude ,inevitably with People Help The People a song which seems very topical in the light of recent events; the line "No-one needs to be alone" has a particular poignancy.

Another single, the unashamedly optimistic Clear Skies Ever Closer, is played as the encore and if this is the band's final act, then this album ensures they go out with style and grace.
