Review: 'EARTH THE CALIFORNIAN LOVE DREAM'
'PORN STAR'

-  Label: 'RANDOM RECORDINGS'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '26th July 2004'

Our Rating:
Despite lumbering themselves with the kind of name you imagine Marc Bolan would have dismissed for being too flowery back in 1968, EARTH THE CALIFORNIAN LOVE DREAM seem true to the old adage of transcending your moniker with your music.

Indeed, previous (debut) single "In The Garden" suggested that ex-Six By Seven guitarist Sam Hempton had fallen squarely on his size nines with this new buncha Nottingham reprobates, and with "Porn Star", they're again up to their full throttle, low-rent Stooges-taunting tricks. The riff on this fucker is simply filthy and it's the kind of Lucozade fizz laced with cheap speed that never fails when assaulting synapses in subterranean hovels. That means it'll be good live, like. Shame it's over in 90 seconds, but sometimes that's enough. In this case it is.

Acoustic B-side "Black Stuff" doesn't slip through your fingers quite so easily, and comes on like the kind of lonely afterhours strum a certain N.Gallagher would once confront us with on a little known Manchester band's flipsides. It's a bit quixotic after "Porn Star", but proves singer Huw Costin has a decent, leather-lunged presence when cut loose from the narky rifferama and that Earth may have more tricks in their haversack come album time. I'd suggest you keep your ears pinned back where this crew are concerned.
