Our Rating:
Continuing Optic Nerve records series of classic single re-issues they are putting out the legendary debut single of The Vaselines from 1987 and the first time it's been on a 7" single which means you only get 2 of the 3 original songs so you miss out on their astonishing version of You Think You're A Man.

I only became a fan of The Vaselines around the time the second single, hearing I think Teenage Superstars on the John Peel show, I then managed to buy a test pressing of that I have loved ever since as it was one of the only records I bought in 1988 while only working one and half days a week while studying.

Well as I've loved both these songs for ages it's hard not to just froth at the mouth as Son Of A Gun is a near perfect debut single of glorious indie pop and Frances McKee's perfect vocals on, as the band put it a song about love and shooting your gun, I'd imagine Eugene Kelly might also claim it would be shooting like your Captain America seeing as that was for a short while the name of his next band, while his vocals work as a great counterpoint as the Ostrich guitar solo kicks in and well I have had this stuck in my head again for ages.

The B-side Rory Rides Me Raw is according to the band about Frances' Bike called Rory that had a rough saddle, but of course it could also be about having far too much sex until you are both raw, this is supremely wonderful jangle pop. If you don't already own these songs, then this single is a must have and for any fans of The Vaselines the chance of owning this as a 7" single should be jumped at.
