Review: 'Crawlies, The'
'Old News'

-  Label: 'Delicious Clam Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '7th August 2020'

Our Rating:
Sheffield’s DIY purveyors of “drone laden, bitter-sweet pop jams featuring dreamy guitar hooks and vocal harmonies to make you tearful”, The Crawies, preface the release of their eponymous debut EP with the release of ‘Old News’ as a single.

According to the press release, ‘Crawlies formed over a shared love of Yo La Tengo, inspired by their “ability to make 15 minute noise jams alongside classic pop gems”, exploring the importance of texture and atmosphere alongside melodies’.

‘Old News does plenty of that, drifting along in a slow, deliberate wash of organ and strolling bass that conjure a soft, dreamy atmosphere. It’s mellow, wistful and casts an air of sad nostalgia, and when the fuzz booms on the bass and the marching drum enters the mix, it takes on a new dynamic before, in time, making a long, slow fade to the horizon.

Spinning together elements of Stereolab and Slowdive, it’s a beguiling piece of shoegazey pop with a vintage twist, and really rather nice.
