Review: 'Darwin FT David J'
'Unkind Lover'

-  Label: 'Bandcamp'
-  Genre: 'Dance' -  Release Date: '15.9.20.'

Our Rating:
Unkind Lover is the new single from Darwin who is David J's manager and also a member of David J & the Gentleman Thieves among other things.

This is a darkly magisterial single from Darwin based around the writings of Dani Burlison and the whispered almost spoken rather than sung vocals are darkly evocative of things that have gone wrong with David J guesting on harmonica alongside Julian Shah-Tayler as this song slowly unfolds and you feel the pain of the mistreatment you have suffered willingly to have that love and David's contribution almost feels like he's evoking Charles Bronson in the desert awaiting a showdown.

The b-side Dance Alone has an early 80's synth-pop feel to it almost like Torch Song but with languid vocals asking us if we want to Dance Alone as you make eyes at each other across the empty or is it crowded dancefloor, as you move towards each other almost as slowly as this song feels. Yes it captures the feeling of 2020 a year when you are allowed to Dance Alone but are unsure if you can dance with someone you don't already know.
