Our Rating:
This is the second single I've reviewed by Julian Shah-Tayler in recent months and this time as well as Mark Gemini Thwaite he also had Marc Slutsky and David J along for support, all three of whom were of course part of the Bauhaus Ruby Celebration tour. It's also the second single I've reviewed this week to feature David J from The Jazz Butcherand Love & Rockets etc.

Some of you will remember Julian Shah-Tayler from his days in Whitey or from his work with Lana Del Ray or a series of LA based covers bands.

This single features two version of The Devil Knows the a-side is the more goth pop dancefloor version that feels quite sunny and upbeat as Julian tells us how much he tried to make things work, it has a subtle breakdown and all sorts of clever electronic effects going off in different places in the mix and is well pretty damn catchy.

The Ruby Rock Version of The Devil Knows adds more guitars and a more straight forward goth rock feel to it, with most of the cool effects stripped out this almost feels like it's the version aimed at daytime rock radio rather than the dancefloor and unfortunately for me in places musically it reminds me of mid 80's losing the plot David Bowie, it's nowhere near that bad mind, but for me the a-side is the better and cooler version, you may of course think the other way round.
