Review: 'OUR MAN IN THE FIELD'
'The Company of Strangers'

-  Label: 'Rocksnob'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '25th September 2020'

Our Rating:
English folk singer Alexander Ellis sings with a Northern lilt with more than a hint of Alt.Country/Americana. He is currently based in London but originates from the North-East.

Of his approach to song writing Ellis says "I believe people want something true, something authentic, so try to write and sing as honestly as possible.

In this spirit, he presents a warm-hearted collection of ten songs with as much unaffected simplicity and directness as possible. The tracks were recorded live in the studio at The Rattle in London’s Tobacco Dock with Jim Wallis as producer. His backing band are Henry Senior (pedal steel guitar), Tom Rosenfeld (bass) and Greg Bishop (drums).

The tunes take the form of one-sided dialogues written in the first person and express the importance of trust and truth in any relationship. From the opening Thin (I Used To Be Bullet Proof) he evokes a genial vulnerability that runs through to the menacingly titled closing tune I Like You So I'll Kill You Last.

It's low key rather than lo-fi and melancholy without being maudlin.
