Review: 'She’s Got Spies'

-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '11th December 2020'

Our Rating:
The third single to be lifted from She’s Got Spies’ second album ‘Isle of Dogs’ reveals Laura Nunez’s knack for catchy synth-orientated pop tunes and talent for languages. While calling London her hometown, Laura’s debut album, ‘Wedi’, was sung in Welsh (after Laura relocated to Cardiff and was inspired by Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci and Super Furry Animals), while ‘Harasho’ is sung entirely in Russian, ‘a winter love song’ inspired by her three years spent living in Moscow.

On this outing, the band mine deep into a lo-fi DIY style for both the recording and the accompanying video, and both are almost self-consciously awkward yet natural at the same time. To unpack that a little, it’s sparse and it’s basic, and it’s presented in a knowing fashion that blurs intentional naffness with operational limitations.

While I’ve absolutely no idea as to the lyrical content or even the vague outline of the sentiment of ‘Harasho’, but I know an alright tune when I hear one, and the un-slick production and language barriers are no impedance to the appreciation of a solid pop song.
