With their second album, ‘Evoke’, Unseen Faith threaten ‘a crushing fusion between deathcore and metalcore at the highest standard’ and come ‘armed with heavy guitar riffs, lots and lots of energy and neck-wrecking breakdowns’.
This is one of those albums that is, unquestionably, heavy, a barrage of double-pedal bass drumming and thick slabs of guitar crashing in crunching chugs providing the main thrust behind a throat-ripping vocal that shifts between bowel-grinding guttural lows and cranium-shattering shrieks. But this is all built around the hushed ripples of tranquillity as expressed through softly chiming post-rock guitar passages and layers of misty synths conjuring reflective moments that border on ambience. Sometimes, those moments of respite pass in a mere bar or two – not time enough to catch one’s breath, but simply to consider the possibility, meaning that the brutal riffs crash in harder and faster and absolutely define ‘relentless’.

Applying this compositional methodology across ten tracks makes for an absolutely exhausting listening experience, as brutal riff lands after brutal riff, and the promise of respite is but a hint at something illusory.
