Pitched as ‘a tongue-in-cheek psychedelic allegory of the mind-bending sinkhole of social media where perceptions of life are distorted and distended in a house of mirrors’, ‘Perfect Life’ is a slow, swaying groove of a tune that invited comparisons to Portishead with its laid back, smoky, almost sedated sound.
‘Perfect Life’ is the closing track from Ishani’s recent ‘Unkind Vibrations’ EP, and it’s one of those songs where the music and the lyrical content make for a surprising contrast. On the surface, sonically, we have a slick, radio-friendly, mainstream ready tune that has immense mass appeal. There may be a dark undercurrent, but no more than is common in a lot of R’n’B. But lyrically, it’s a swipe at all of that, a hard swipe at everything that is superficial, manufactured.
It’s an articulation of difficulty and self-doubt, an exploration of the conflict of being drawn to social media for connection while finding the experience only more isolating and distancing when presented with an endless feed of baking perfection, glam joy and ideal living.
The perfect life is, of course a myth, and Ishani digs deep into the contradictions of life and social media rather nicely here.
