Review: 'Blake, Ruth'
'Brave Ships'

-  Label: 'Bandcamp'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '27.2.21.'

Our Rating:
Ruth Blake is an ethereal Folk Singer songwriter based in Somerset and who has been part of The Music As Medicine Collective and Bright Sky Community. The Single was recorded and produced by Damian Mahoney in his Padded Cell studio in Old Trafford.

The single opens with the full version of Brave Ships a gently evocative song of hope, that when you need it, you might get the help you need. Ruth sounds like a slightly breathier Joan Armatrading and a bit like Shawn Colvin this song will draw you in and help keep you calm among the stormy times we live in.

I Am is a sparsely beautiful rumination that vocally reminds me of the slowest Joan Baez songs with imagery that could have come from Joni Mitchell or Anne Briggs.

The single concludes with the radio Edit of Brave ships that's a minute and a half shorter than the first version but other than missing some of the instrumental bits is the same but being that much shorter seems to have a touch more accessibility on first listen, but really both versions are well worth hearing.
