Review: 'Cowgirl'
'Caroline'

-  Label: 'Safe Suburban Home'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '22nd January 2021'

Our Rating:
Cowgirl is the latest project to feature illustrious local luminaries Danny Trew Barton (vocals/ guitar) and Sam Coates (Vocals/ guitar). Former Federal Barton is eternally juggling myriad projects alongside his own solo vehicle under the Wolf Solent moniker while Coates is one of the few people who can actually carry off a fringed jacket in Northern England, and as Cowgirl they craft classic 60s-infused fuzzed-out indie-rock stompers.

Their latest single ‘Caroline’, recorded at the same session that yielded its predecessor, illustrates just how well-honed they’ve got their songwriting. The press release suggest they knocked it out in no more than the time it takes to play it – and clocking in at just a minute and a half, that’s really saying something. But they’re well-practised and prolific, and ‘Caroline’ combines an easy groove with some bold guitars and an instantly accessible vocal melody.

Described by the band as ‘a dumb ode to old time rock n roll’, it’s got hints of The Ramones in its unapologetic simplicity that reminds us that so often less is more, and if they make it sound effortless, that’s because to them it really is.

Flipside ‘Shut Up’ is more of the same – in a good way: they’re nothing if not consistent – and spreads over a full, sprawling, minute and fifty-nine seconds. You could never accuse Cowgirl of indulgence or outstaying their welcome.
