Review: 'Night Thieves'
'Spiral (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '19th September 2021'

Our Rating:
‘Spiral’ is the second release from heavy rock trio Night Thieves, a heavy rock trio. Like so many bands just starting to build a fanbase through touring, they hit a wall as Covid hit on the eve of a tour with Marissa and the Moths. Instead of waiting around kicking their heels, they set to work on evolving their sound and crafting their songwriting, meaning that when they were finally able to get together in a studio again, they were 100% ready and had everything nailed for the three songs that make up the new EP.

‘Atoned’ crunches in with a beefed-up, chunky riff, and the sound is solid. They’ve achieved the sound of a traditional power trio combo with only bass and drums by way of instrumentation, following the lead of one of their touchstones, Royal Blood. While they also cite the likes of Biffy Clyro and Incubus, they also share similar territory as Black Moth and Sky Valley Mistress, hard-hitting heavy rock acts with strong female vocals.

Night Thieves play softer and go more for the hooks in their choruses, but that most certainly isn’t a criticism – those hooks have barbs, and they’re by no means soft. Single ‘Off the Wire’ begins gently and with rippling, chorused guitars, before getting properly meaty in the riff department, and properly catchy in the chorus department, and closer ‘Figure it Out’ really drives it home, rounding the set off nicely. Hopefully they’ll get to take it out on the road before long.
