'DANGERLUST (demo EP)'

Our Rating:
DANGERLUST are front lass Rachel backed up by three hard-looking geezers from the Sheffield area who demonstrate they're rather good at ye olde pop-punk malarkey on this three-track demo EP released through their website www.dangerlust.rocks.it .

Opening tune "King Of The World" is the cream of the crop. Immediately recalling Elastica in Tony's lurching, rhino-fart basslines and the Pixies/ Breeders axis in the spiralling, bitten-off guitars, it finds Rachel in effectively sneery vocal form, introducing us to the song with the lines: "Can you look at your life and tell me you're proud of what you've done?" in rhetorical fashion. It's good, challengingly melodic stuff, with Rachel reminding this writer - who's about to show his age again - of the Rezillos' Fay Fife vocally. That's a compliment, incidentally.

Second tune "Something New" is OK, but the weakest tune here, with the guitars of the metallic, cheesewire variety ensuring the song is ultimately too sludgy to succeed. The call and response vocals are decent, though, and do help the track rise from the mire somewhat.

Closing song "Lie" is a return to form, though. This one's initially plangent, with Rachel harmonising sweetly with herself and crooning atop the kind of descending chord sequence that can't fail. Inevitably, the fuzz pedal overload does arrive, but it doesn't usurp the song's natural melodic instincts and the way the band refuse to let go of the closing staccato burst also impresses.

There's something a mite chaotic about Dangerlust, but it's endearing rather than offputting. This three-track EP is a good introduction and, as self-produced demos go, one of the more distinctive ones our ears have been battered with in recent months. Keep these in mind.
