Review: 'Granfalloon'
'Bee on a String'

-  Label: 'Cosmic Glue'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '8th April 2022'

Our Rating:
And so it is that ‘Bee on a String’ is the first single from Granfalloon’s fourth studio album, and we’re informed that his influences ‘include Harry Nilsson, Jonathan Richman, and Love’.

Judging by the biographical notes that state Granfalloon is ‘Currently working on his fourth album; a double, potentially triple album…’ it’s not quite there yet., but ‘Bee on a String is one of the early fruits of these recording sessions and definitely points towards the warm sound of 70’s folk rock with a dose of Richard Lomax’s customary nods to surrealism’.

The title makes me think of an irritatingly cuddly spin on 90s crusties swilling Merrydown smoking spliffs while keeping a dog on a string, but there’s nothing crusty or indie about this light and airy sliver of poppy prog with a heavy country twang. Oh, but it is irritatingly cuddly. Some would call it escapism or easy listening, melodic and fun, and they’d likely have a point, and it’s maybe just how I’m wired but instead of finding jauntiness uplifting and fun, it just gets on my tits. So I guess it comes down to which side of the fence you sit on songs like ELO’s ‘Mr Blue Sky’. If you dig it, you’ll probably dig this. If no, probably not so much.
