Our Rating:
This elegant classical meets electronica album is a soundtrack to a documentary feature from director Martyn Robertson which followed 14-year-old Scottish surfer Ben Larg as he risked life and limb to surf one of the biggest waves in the world at Mullaghmore, Ireland.

Glaswegian, Scott Twynholm is an experienced composer who started his career in bands before going solo. He was once a member of Looper with Stuart David of Belle And Sebastian. Aside from TV and film work he has also scored music for many theatre and dance companies.

With titles like The Restless Ocean and White Water, the music effectively highlights the ebb and flow of waves. A beautiful piano refrain called Japanese Sand is a standout piece with shades of Aphex Twin’s ‘Avril 14th’.

The slow, gentle melodies display a respect for the ocean’s strength rather than seeking to evoke its natural power or threat. Storm Lorenzo is one of the few pieces to break the mood of relative tranquility.

A one minute track with an unmistakably Scottish lilt is entitled David And Goliath as a reference to the challenge the young boy set himself.

The 22 tracks on ‘Ride The Wave’ are, not surprisingly, short with the suspenseful 4 minute title track being the longest piece. Nevertheless, the compositions amount to more than just squibs and have a standalone grace and beauty.
