‘Chum’ is only marginally less irritating than ‘pal’, and is on a par with ‘mate’. These terms, more often than note spoken from the mouths of people you barely know, or worse, people you absolutely fucking loathe, seem to be the verbal equivalent of wearing a badge that says ‘I’m a twat’. I had a senior manager kick me out of a job once, then pat me on the back and call me ‘mate’ before moaning about having to get a bus to the other office on town, so this is coming from a place of experience – but it means I had to fight a deep-rooted prejudice to being myself to listen to this.
I’m glad I did.
‘Beefcake Doctrine’ is a gritty sludge riff-driven beast that combines post--punk bleakness with a grimy grunge aesthetic. Said riff nags away repetitively and is reminiscent of ‘Bleach’ era Nirvana, but it’s clipped and pulled taut against a tight rhythm and sits alongside DAF as much as it does Nirvana.

Tense and intense, ‘Beefcake Doctrine’ (I think) pokes at the toxic masculine shit that has been everywhere since forever but has become a hot topic since Andrew Tate blew up globally. It’s a kicking song with major grit, and feels like a song for now. It’s a first-class taster for the album due in April.
