Review: 'Downpilot'
'The Forecast'

-  Label: 'Tapete Records/Bandcamp'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '17.2.23.'

Our Rating:
The Forecast is the seventh album by Seattle's Downpilot that is mainly a solo project by producer and multi-instrumentalist Paul Hiraga. This album is a beautiful listen with lyrics that pack an emotional punch. With limited guest musicians including Terry DeCastro and Melinda Rice.

The album opens with Black Eye an acoustic strummed argument, trying to avoid the sort of fight that leads to that Black Eye that people keep asking you about, how you got it etc, the tune is far prettier and peaceful than the lyrics about the endless cycle.

Totems is all slow drumming, strings with the careworn vocals staring out to the ocean and the depths his relationship has sunk into, seeking a way out and forwards again, an air of sadness envelopes the listener.

My Favorite Neighborhood seems to be hoping to be able to be comfortable walking round your Favorite Neighborhood, set against the slow carefully wistful music.

Red desert adds gently evocative violin line to this tale of longing and despair among the ruins of life not going to plan.

Strangers Hotel is hushed vocals and gentle piano on this song that like much of this album reminds me of Steve McQueen era Prefab Sprout and Danny Wilson, this is music to get close and hug the one you love, to try to make sure everything's ok.

Balancer is an almost not their subtle love song reminiscent of Clem Snide, this is sung as the gentlest of lullaby's to be sung late at night.

Antfinger isn't some new sex game as far as I can tell, this has a simple organ part slowly progressing like a line of Ants marching towards the hill.

Night Shade is about a partner whose as deadly as the plant, who serves the pain cold and unexpectedly, as musically this is super nice, a little downbeat, but gives no clue as to the distress being caused.

On The way keeps with the downbeat wistful feelings, as gentle as can be as usual contrasting with the panic and despair in the lyrics.

The album closes with The Forecast it will be downbeat, overcast, grey with storms coming, is there any hope left, maybe as the slow careful piano helps ease your aching heart.
