Review: 'Vanity Rose'

Our Rating:
Jubilee is the third album by the Bedford based Garage rock duo Vanity Rose who are Eleesha Prothero and Mat Roberts. The album is a loosely structured tribute to the late great Punk Princess Jordan Mooney. This Vanity Rose is not to be confused with the Spanish band of the same name.

This blasts out of the speakers like a low budget Ramones on I Don't Care, good basic sleazy garage punk with plenty of yelps a ballsy attitude about the things they don't care about.

Control Of Animal is a song for some sexual domination set against a chunky riff, skewering guitars, as Eleesha gets down and guttural like a cross between Nina Hagen and Tara Rex, with plenty of guttural grunts over the cries that she wants you to be her dog.

Blitzkrieg Bop is a touch slower than the Ramones but has a good sneer to it and of course its a song that is imprinted in just about every punks brain. This may not do too much with it but still sounds good.

Rock N Gone has a good rumble going on making this sound a lot like The Courettes, with a great old school rock & Roll guitar solo as it rumble along with a few nods towards Train Kept A Rollin.

Rachael Acid has a desperate feel to it, like all sorts of stuff has happened to Rachel while she's on that acid, gutterall groans punctuated by what the guitars are doing over that super steady drumbeat.

Eat the rich is yet another song with this title, and well we all know why you'd want to deal with the worst of the rich scum, this flies along in a Long Insiders kind of way, with some good moaning drawled vocals.

Jubilee has a churchy opening before it goes all Sex Pistols style sneering jibing punk about the magnificent mess of a film that is Jubilee.

Shut Ya Mouth is an angry bile ridden rant against all the people telling them how to live and how to behave, let alone what to wear, just Shut Ya mouth and let them get on it.

Butt Crush is all yelps sentiments and wailing garage guitar as they do the latest dance craze The Butt Crush. We all need a Butt Crush.
Giant Girl is all about having sex and other fun and games with a Giant girl who may well crush you leaving you in need of some help as she's on a rampage.

Glass River has a darker sound, slower more deliberate as we sail down that glass river with her. Stand Up for what you believe, is the sort of standard message that never gets old, set against wailing distressed guitars, deep pained vocals, this gets to the heart of the matter.

The Reek is about that smell, that you smell as Lydia Lunch puts it, the people Vanity Rose are singing about are really stinking the place out. This is a good nasty slice of garage punk to close the album.
